"Uplift" is the 6th release from the award winning Michael Cleary Band. Already known for their stellar song writing and world class musicianship, this release shows them at their absolute best. Two years in the making, this album grabs you from the start with the funky burn of "How You Keep It Up" and then launches into the catchy, shout along anthem "Love Is Such A Sweet Sound". Follow that up with the Reggae tinged "2nd Nature" featuring members of Deep Banana Blackout on horns which leads into "I Don't Care What You Look Like", a lyrical love poem with dreamy guitars and deep bass. Track five features Curt Ramm (E-Street Band/Nile Rogers/They Might Be Giants) on trumpet in the mariachi/ska stylings of "Every Day's A Holiday". "See You Later" is a funk/rock booty shaker followed by the ballad "Turn It Around" which harkens back to the days of Van Morrison and Hall and Oates. Track 7, "Home" is an apocalyptic party song that sets up "Look At Me Now" as a rocker with a message. Track 10. "Giving Up Good Love" is a song about fidelity in the style of Sugar Ray followed by the country tinged "Dontch Think". The album closes with the epic "Don't Stray" which features George Harrison-esque harmony slide guitars. All in all, this self produced album is their best effort yet, showing that this veteran band continues to mature and hone their song writing skills. Lovingly mastered by Dana White at Specialized Mastering, the polish and execution on this latest disc results in a sonic wonderland that will delight and satisfy your ears.

MCB's 5th cd is chock full of their trademark harmonies and world class musicianship. Add in their catchiest tunes ever and you have a masterful disc that gets better with every listen. Funk, Folk, Rock, Country, World Beat, Latin...MCB Five has it all.

The Michael Cleary Band has been performing for 20 years and their newest cd MCB Five is their finest yet. This disc is their first that is completely self produced and recorded in their own studio. Their efforts have resulted in a collection of songs described as an organic melting pot of great lyrics, catchy tunes, and sonic ear candy. The listener gets taken on a rolling journey from the opening chimes of the infectious “Mind Made Up” to the pulsing funk of “When you get back” thru poignant reflection in “Barfly” followed by the uplifting charm of “Cool Down”. Then, “You Got My Love” kicks in with an epic rock jam capped off with the Latin feel and tale of longing in “Away-O”. “Free James Brown” is the country flavored story of an unlikely fan of the Godfather of Soul, while “Highlight of My Day” is a toe-tapping celebration of the simpler things in life. The album concludes with the epic “See You in The Morning”. A bombastic rocker based on the Heavens Gate UFO cult. The music will draw you in but it’s the lyrics that will keep you coming back. Each repeat listening reveals a little more charm, subtle innuendos, witty turns of phrase, and glimpses of life, love, and adversity. The songwriting shines as the star of this disc and its a reflection of a band that is musically mature, diverse and skilled at their craft. The quality of the recording is superb and MCB Five will surprise your ears with something new each time you listen to it.

The Michael Cleary Band is MIchael Cleary - Guitar/ Vocals, Vin Delaria - Keys/Vocals, Lee Sylvestre - Guitar/ Vocals, Jedd Chlebowski - Bass, Edmund Peart - Drums/Vocals, Frank Bauer - Percussion.

MCB Live- The Story
When one of the Michael Cleary Band’s fans asked if his brother could come and record us, they said sure. It turns out his brother was Pete Nenortas of Satronen Sound out of Maine,, and he showed up at Black Eyed Sally's with a full blown Protools multitrack recording setup. Not only were the tracks recorded in high fidelity and with great care, but the band also happened to have all their knobs dialed right and rose to the occasion with one of their most memorable performances. The sound, the vibe, the audience, everything just clicked, and when Chuck Rubano of Capture Productions heard the tracks, he knew he was listening to something special. Eagerly wanting to be a part of this project, Chuck painstakingly mixed the tunes with his vintage Trident mixing board in his Protools equipped studio. After some finishing touches by Dana White at Specialized Mastering, all the stars were aligned, and the result is MCB Live.
What you have here on this cd is a nearly perfect snapshot of what the Michael Cleary Band is all about. Great songs, monstrous solos, epic jams, funky grooves, wacky humor; all in all a diverse, joyous musical stew played and sung by talented musicians who have been performing together for nearly 16 years.
Starting with the impassioned vocal performance of Ed Corvo singing “Never Gonna Let” which features some blistering guitar work by MC, they then break it down into a dynamic, funky version of “All To You” which climaxes with a Hendix inspired groove where the band literally ends up giving its all to you.
Following the catchy radio-ready arrangement of “Stand” the band breaks into a raucous version of the fan favorite, “Zydeco Girl” where Vince Delaria plays every note he knows and then some! Vincenzo!
The band then delivers a smoldering version of “Funky 16” where Ed implores the listener to feel the groove with a veiled threat but by then the audience has been willingly taken captive for the ride.
What can one say about “World Like This” besides Paul Bozzi! Paul Bozzi! Paul Bozzi! The band’s illustrious percussionist performs an epic version of this MCB classic, which opens with a bombastic drum battle between himself and drummer John Corvo. The breakdown in the middle is classic MCB with a hypnotic, spacey jam underneath a sing-along chant while Paul “Pops” Bozzi rants and raves!
On any given night the band will spontaneously break into songs and jams that they’ve never played before, and this night was no exception. The best example of this is in the solo section of the next tune “Go To Bed” where they go from a reggae flavored Jeff Beck melody, backed by a Police inspired high hat rhythm, into a Zappa-esque rock montage climaxed by a Ted Nugent riff all without missing a beat. It was never played before and will never be played again but the tracks were rolling to prove that it really happened. And to top it all off they seamlessly segue into the closer of the evening, “Child Inside,” a song they’ve been playing for over 15 years but still deliver with an enthusiasm and a driving energy as if they wrote it last week.
There is a special energy and camaraderie that makes each MCB performance fun and exciting, and all the people involved in this project have done a masterful job in making “MCB Live “ the next best thing to being there.

Check out these reviews/ comments raving about MCB Live!

These guys have been dishing out their R&B/blues (with a bit of funk tossed in to get the rumps shaking) for nearly 20 years. Their latest album, recorded live at Black Eyed Sally's in Hartford, is a fine recording. It has lots of solos that actually work, some extend-o-jams that keep the crowd up. It's all that you'd expect from a established, polished band. 3/14 Craig Gilbert/New Haven Advocate

MCB Live Live records are typically best saved for bands that have either a tremendous live show like Kiss or for bands that have a legacy that warrants as much ala The Rolling Stones. So reviewing a live record from Hartford act The Michael Cleary Band is a bit of a pre-loaded gun. The Michael Cleary Band has been carving out their niche as the areas preeminent blues-based rock band for almost 16 years now and they are great at what they do: check the solo at the tail end of Never Gonna Let, the harmonies on Stand, or pitch perfect classic rock stand-in Zydeco. The live setting suits them and it´s the relative coziness of the venue that yields a hominess as you have fans squabbling, the band´s inner dialogues and if you listen hard enough you can hear the clinking of pint glasses between sets. 3/21 David Lewis/Play New Haven magazine

Michael Cleary Band ~ MCB Live For the uninitiated, MCB Live is a great introduction to the Michael Cleary Band, the closest you´ll come to experiencing them live. For area fans who´ve followed MCB´s near 16-year road of music-making in our region, it´s a cool souvenir to be savored, a colorful snapshot of these musicians completely in their element. Recorded at Hartford´s own Black-Eyed Sally´s, MCB Live delivers an evening´s worth of funkified songs capable of moving both hearts and feet. Brothers Ed and John Corvo lay down and power the grooves here with soul and precision, abetted by Paul Bozzi´s engaging percussion; keysman Vince Delaria at times conjures up the late great Kenny Kirkland with his wondrously colorful lines; and Cleary presides over his ensemble with soulfully agile vocals and guitar. Groovier than the Allman Brothers and more riffalicious than Tower of Power, MCB´s sound is an audibly tempting brew seasoned with skill and feeling. High points "Zydeco Girl," TOP-esque groove-fest "Funky 16" and closer "Child Inside" joyfully illustrate their musical bond is as energetic and entertaining as ever. Catch them live in Middletown on April 6th at La Boca. Guy-Michael Grande/Ear Candy/Rare Reminder

5 Stars - Incredible live performance... This disc is a great example of a soulful, incredibly talented band at their absolute best. Mike and the boys sound so tight, you can feel the energy on this disc...it's a great representation of how powerful they are live! Lee Sylvestre / Bill Carlton Band

The Michael Cleary Band MCB Live (self-released)

I am dating myself when I say that the Michael Cleary Band is more my parents’ music than my own. Influences like Little Feat, Bruce Hornsby and the Range, and the Allman Brothers guide their tunes. However, where their previous discs left me cold, MCB Live has finally convinced me that these guys are worth noting. And you know what did it for me? The lyrics. They’re a great working-class band with a great live show. Dan Berry, Hartford Advocate

The Michael Cleary band is a Hartford institution. They are celebrating their 18th year of making original blues/rock music with a twist and have been called Hartford's answer to the Allman Brothers. The MCB is a perennial favorite in the Hartford Advocate's reader's poll and previous winners of the "Best Rock" and "Best Blues" categories. They have played with Tower of Power, Little Feat, Average White Band, Joan Osbourne, Peter Wolf, NRBQ and countless other regional and national acts. Their previous release, "Tales from the Cup," was released in August 2004 and their current release "This Life" is available now.

funniest description we've heard so far: Hootie meets George Michael, but better! Here's another; Frank Zappa meets Lynyrd Skynyrd. otherwise we could be described as funky jazzy rock with a bluesy latin twist, buttered with a little worldbeat zydeco soul. Basically a mix of Tower of Power, Hendrix, Santana, Phish, DMB, Paul Simon, Miles Davis, XTC, Wilco, Little Feat, CSNY.

1994-1996 was a memorable time for us. MCB had been voted best rock band in the Hartford Advocate reader's poll and we were riding high creatively and commercially. The band and producer Mike Arafeh were striving to make the best recordings that we could and this collection is a representation of our efforts. We've included some live studio recordings, remastered favorites and some multitrack mixes that have remained unreleased until now. While most of these songs remain part of our live set and some only come out for the occasional "dust off", pouring thru the archives reveals their genesis. Some memorable moments include the 30 person choir on "Fails", playing guitar everywhere from the kitchen to the bathroom, singing naked on "Peace Finally Comes" and of course, the coffee. I feel so blessed working with such talented people on both sides of the glass; the Corvo Bros., Paul "Pops" Bozzi, keyboardists extraordinaire Vince, Scooter, and Tony "Abu", Caudles and Mike Arafeh. We hope you get as much enjoyment listening to this collection as we did putting it together.

Peace,

M.C.

Rites of Spring: The Michael Cleary Band after 13 years is Hartford´s answer to the Allman Brothers.

The first weekend of spring brought with it some very un-spring-like weather such as snow and ice, but it also brought a couple of really good shows to warm the heart of any lover of local, original music. On Saturday, at the Arch Street Tavern I caught a heartfelt and very well received set by the long-running Michael Cleary Band. The Michael Cleary Band is a Hartford institution. For 13 years the band has been churning out their highly addictive blend of blues-based rock to appreciative audiences in the area. They do an excellent job of merging different styles of music into the standard blues rock template. So, while the songs have a bluesy rock base, there are also traces of funk, jazz, country, soul and Latin in the mix, making the band sound at times like Hartford's own version of the Allman Brothers.

Each member of the band is talented in his own right, but Cleary definitely deserves some notice for his ace guitar playing. A master of his instrument, he effortlessly shoots out bluesy, emotive solos especially on the occasions when the band gets down and jams. But he's also a solid rhythm player, able to lay down a nice solid groove, when duty calls.

Cleary calls his band a "labor of love" and one can hear this love in the music they play. Even more so, you can feel the love the fans show for this veteran band as they danced the night away to the music.

Call It What You Like is the album that started it all. Renowned guitar phenomenon, Michael Cleary was tearing up the Connecticut circuit with the 3 piece power trio "The Bus" when he ventured out on his own to experiment with some of his compositions in a more expanded format. Enlisting Paul Bozzi, who was the drummer in The Bus, to play percussion, he then hooked up with John and Ed Corvo on drums and bass, and Tony Scaringella on keys and brought them into the studio to help cook his musical stew. What started as one man's vision soon became a complete group effort, and the care and dedication they gave to perfecting the arrangements and performances turned this into a timeless masterpiece that still sounds as fresh, exciting and moving today, as it did when it was first released. Surprises and ear candy abound. From the "everything but the kitchen sink" vocal arrangements in the title track to the multi-tracked guitar mayhem of Riff of The Day, listeners will find themselves grooving and smiling, thinking and feeling and wanting to listen to it all over again. Once you are turned onto the Michael Cleary Band's songs you are compelled to go see them live, and that, my friends, is another story....
